In its most recent wage-setting decision, the Australian Fair Pay Commission announced that it will conduct a review of minimum wages for juniors, trainees and apprentices as part of a wider review of Australian Pay and Classification Scales later this year.
The review of Pay Scales will commence with the release of a discussion paper in September this year. The discussion paper will seek feedback from interested parties in relation to Pay Scales, rates of pay for juniors, trainees and apprentices.
The Commission will seek submissions, conduct consultations and commission research as part of the review.
In submissions to the Commission’s 2006 and 2007 Wage Reviews, key stakeholders including ACCI, ACTU and AIG urged the Commission to proceed with caution in reviewing minimum wage rates for juniors, trainees and apprentices because of the complexities of the issues involved.
